The Community of Actonville has been badly affected by the Covid-19 pandemic and due to the scarcity of medical supplies, skills and resources, the 200% Foundation embarked on a project to pull together several religious organisations and formed an official Actonville Covid-19 Relief Committee.

The key purpose was to assist vulnerable citizens directly affected by the pandemic and those with low immune systems.

Chaplain Manogari Moonsammy from the 200% Foundation highlighted that a majority of people are in a fragile mental state and are experiencing stress, depression, anxiety, grief and bereavement, trauma and breakdowns.

“This has been triggered by the death of a loved one, unemployment and retrenchments, reduced income, divorce and marital stress – all incurred during the lockdown.

“Others, particularly senior citizens, have been placed in self-isolation for their safety.

“This has resulted in frustration and irritation after months of being indoors with no physical exercise or stimulation.”

In an attempt to raise their spirits during these tough times, the 200% Foundation will host a series of Covid-19-compliant community rebuilding wellness workshops throughout Benoni.

“Phase one concentrates on the physical and mental wellness of the mind and body.

“Phase two concentrates on emotional wellness and grief and bereavement workshops will be hosted to facilitate those struggling to come to terms with the loss of a loved one,” she said.

The first wellness workshop kicks off at Actonville Park on March 13 (in the event of bad weather, the contingency date will be March 14).

The workshop will start from 10am to 12 noon, registration and temperature checks start at 9am.

The programme consists of various activities, which include:

• Tai chi by the Tai Chi Chuan Dojo in Benoni

• Laugh therapy by Guiding Light

• Breathing and relaxation techniques by the Advait Sanctuary

• Self defence Techniques by On Point Protection Skills (OPPS).

There will be a five-a-side no-contact soccer tournament and individual cardio workouts will be facilitated by the Superstars Soccer Team.

The Department of Health will also be present to enlighten the community on coping techniques and safety precautions to help contain the virus.

Snack packs and a takeaway lunch will be provided.

Law-enforcement and security companies will be present to ensure the safety of vehicles.

The event is for those who are 18 years to 80 years old; no children are allowed.

Wheelchair participants will be accommodated.

There is no cost involved; however, donations are welcomed.

Bookings are on a first-come basis, and RSVPing is essential as the number of people allowed in the park will be restricted due to Covid-19 regulations.

Groups will consist of 20 people only and social distancing is applicable.

RSVP must be made via WhatsApp on 074 099 0999.

State the number of people attending.
