Eight distinctions for Hans Moore matriculant

Monnette didn’t have a set schedule that she followed during lockdown.

Former Hoërskool Hans Moore matric Monnette van de Venter achieved eight distinctions in Afrikaans Home Language (86%), English First Additional Language (90%), mathematics (93%), life orientation (92%), accounting (81%), engineering graphics and design (85%), life sciences (81%) and physical sciences (89%).

“I am very happy about my results,” said Monnette.

“I took a total of 10 subjects in my matric year and would have loved to receive distinctions in all of them. I missed the mark by a few percentages.”

The two subjects she didn’t receive distinctions in were Unisa music Grade Seven (77%) and AdMaths (76%).

“I am very proud of what I have accomplished and still don’t regret taking so many subjects,” she said.

With Covid-19 hitting South Africa in March and sending everyone into a lockdown, many matrics started to panic.

“Covid-19 had a huge impact on the year with a new way of learning, socialising and living,” she explained.

“I decided at the beginning of lockdown that I was not going to let the virus get the better of me and I was still going to achieve the goals that I had set for myself.

“I found it quite easy to adapt to the new way of doing things.”

Monnette didn’t have a set schedule that she followed during the lockdown.

“I tried to complete the work that was given to me on the same day that it was assigned,” she said.

“I knew that if I were to fall behind I would struggle to catch up again because even though we didn’t go to school, the workload didn’t decrease.”

Monnette enjoyed the online schooling and classes even though it was different from the norm that she was used too.

“I could do all my work in the comfort of my home. I could also work at my own pace and didn’t feel pressured to get work done in a certain time, for example, having to copy something off of the board in the classroom.”

Monnette enjoyed being able to play and pause voice notes and videos while being at home so that she was able to make proper notes.

“I also enjoyed being able to watch explanation videos more than once when I didn’t understand it the first time,” she added.

This former matriculant says she is going to miss all her school events the most as well as her friends

“I am going to miss athletics, watching the Revue showcases, sports days and so on. I enjoyed supporting my school and being a part of a big family.”

Monnette, who loves mathematics, will be studying actuarial sciences at the University of Pretoria this year.

This music lover achieved much to be proud of during her schooling days:

• Deputy head girl in matric and part of the RCL since 2018

• Received full colours in academics since Grade Eight (top student since 2016)

• Received full colours for music

• Item winner at the Allegretto Eistedford for instrumental guitar Unisa Grade Seven

• Top academic achievers tour to the USA in 2018

Monnette thanked her parents, Monica and Willem van de Venter, as well as her boyfriend Ruan Reinecke for all their support and love.

“I would never have gotten these amazing results without them,” she said.

“My advice for the new matrics is that hard work will be rewarded. Remember that you are doing all of this only for yourself, no one else.

“You are the one who will be writing those exams at the end of the year and you will get out only what you put in.

The hard work, tears and frustration will all be worth it in the end!”
