The City Times visited some local schools on February 23 to speak to some of the matric learners, principals and deputy principals about how they felt about the matric 2020 results despite the pandemic.
Hoërskool Hans Moore: Rhulani Mngomezulu: “I enjoyed 2020, even though it was very tough and a struggle with Covid-19. The school still remained our family, a safe place. I had fun, regardless of the circumstances.”
Danie Booysen: “I am going to be doing my BSC studies so that I can study further for veterinary sciences at the University of Pretoria. I am very excited.”
Benoni High School: Caid Anderson: “I am going to study towards getting my pilot’s licence. This is all going to happen at Rand Airport, and I am very excited to get started.”
Keagan Haumann: “I am going to the Harlequins Rugby Academy, there I will not only be playing rugby but also studying business management.”
Belvedere School: Deputy principal Liesel Oosthuizen: “I am so proud of all the learners. Three achieved 70 per cent in their subjects. We are happy.”
Hoërskool Brandwag: Chrische Snyman: “I received a bachelor’s pass. I am glad we kept our heads up during the tough year.”
Unity Secondary School: Deputy principal Buyisile Zondo said they are very proud of their learners and the results. “It was a tough year but our learners and teachers did their best.”
Ashbury International College: Thando Msimango: “It was a difficult year; however, we did our best and I’m proud of my fellow schoolmates.”
Liverpool Secondary School: Principal Navin Ramsunder said he is happy the school obtained a 40 per cent bachelor’s pass.
Willowmoore High School: Principal Lorna Sanders is pleased with the results and is proud of the learners.
Rulani Mhlongo from Benoni High School said: “I am very happy with my results and I can't wait to start the next chapter of my life. I will be studying medicine and I am still deciding between the University of Pretoria and the University of Cape Town.”
Teacher at Hoërskool Hans Moore Estienne Rootman hands Charney Breytenbach's matric report to her. Breytenbach said: “I really enjoyed this year, making the most of the time I had, but I am relieved to have completed the year and start the next chapter of my life.”

Finally done with school and ready for the future is Belvedere School matriculants Mpendulo Nyembe (left), Liesel Oosthuizen (deputy principal) and Bart Muller. Nyembe intends on studying three more subjects to obtain a general matric and Muller intends on studying to become a chef to one day open a restaurant.
Former matric of Hoërskool Hans Moore Zianci van Zyl said: “Everyone attends school, once you leave school your future is all about you, what you do and what you choose. I am going to study BCom management.”
