Wattville youngsters keep the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct clean

The 23-year-old said the community should support them because this creates an eco-friendly environment and some sort of employment.

Six youngsters from Wattville have dedicated their time to keeping the OR Tambo Cultural Precinct clean.

Now, they need the community to help them by donating garden tools and for more volunteers to join them.

These youngsters, who are part of the Lakeview Enterprise Project, clean the precinct every Saturday.

Lehlohonolo William Khiba, one of the volunteers, said they saw the need to keep the precinct clean to avoid land pollution as it is unhealthy and harmful.

“The precinct is a cultural and educational-based institution. It is also a tourist attraction that focuses on the historic times of OR Tambo. With the level of its importance, it was necessary for us to maintain its image.

“We also saw the high unemployment rate within the area and this project keeps us busy,” said Lehlohonolo.

The 23-year-old said the community should support them because this creates an eco-friendly environment and some sort of employment.

“I would appreciate if any company or residents can donate towards this initiative financially so that the volunteers can get maybe a stipend or something small just to keep them encouraged,” he said.

“It is very important for us to keep our environment clean because air pollution can lead to long-term health effects.

“The precinct is a tourist attraction and when it’s clean more people can make use of it, even the children can play without any fear.”

These young people would appreciate donations of masks, sanitiser, brooms, refuse bags, herbicides and garden tools.

Anyone who would like to donate or volunteer can contact Lehlohonolo on 063 166 1070 or email lakeviewonline17@gmail.com
