Daveyton artist keeps people with disability busy through art

Board member of Elethu Cheshire Home in Daveyton and artist Michael Maqungo is sharing his passion for art with the residents at the home.

Michael draws alphabets and numbers, which he gives to the residents to colour in so they can keep busy.

The 37-year-old said being part of the home has made him commit to assist and develop people with disabilities through his skills, knowledge and experience.

The home assists people with disabilities throughout Ekurhuleni regardless of their colour, race, or creed, by providing for the necessary needs of their physical, mental and spiritual wellbeing.

Michael is a deputy secretary in the board; he was elected in 2018.

He said his love for comics or sequential art was inspired by the comic strip called “Bafanas” by Sydney Chama that used to appear in Bona Magazine.

“As a child, I would also draw things that I would see on the television and in movies. That’s when I knew that this is what I wanted to do.”

The Daveyton resident is also part of the Imbumba Art room based at the Rhoo Hlatshwayo Community Art Centre in the area.

His role is to facilitate and manage visual activities such as drawings, painting, comic and decoupage making and mural painting.

He said due to the pandemic it has been a challenge to make ends meet as the art centre has been closed and there has been no utilisation of the space for exhibitions or events.
