Deneys Conradie finally gets working lifts

The first contractor who worked on the lifts did not complete the project. However, the second contractor completed the project in record time.

Residents at Deneys Conradie Residentia in Western Extension were delighted to experience the convenience of working lifts on February 1, after years of limited mobility due to non-operational lifts.

Ward 73 councillor Sinethemba Matiwane, Zinzile Nxesi, a representative from the office of the MMC for Human Settlements, and contractors attended the ribbon-cutting to officially open the two new lifts to residents.
Matiwane explained that the lifts stopped working in 2014.

“The first contractor who worked on the lifts did not complete the project. However, the second contractor completed the project in record time.

“When the lifts stopped working, it affected the mobility of residents and access for emergency services.
“Now residents can move from the top floor to the bottom with ease,” he said.

Tito Moto, the senior project manager, added that the lifts are connected to a generator which will switch on when there is no electricity.

Gert O’Kelly, a resident of the council-owned flats, said they can now go grocery shopping and not worry about getting heavy parcels back to their flats.

After all the formalities of the handover, residents produced a letter addressed to the MMC of Human Settlements, Lesiba Mpya, that highlighted other issues they have at the council flats.

These include gutters not being cleaned, broken geysers not attended to for over nine months and non-servicing of fire hydrants.

Nxesi assured residents their grievances letter would be handed to the MMC.
