Amateur golfer going places
This amateur golfer is very pleased with his achievements.

Ryan van Velzen, an amateur golfer who plays for the Benoni Country Club (BCC), is progressing in the golfing fraternity at a rapid pace.
The golfer, who turned 19 on October 5, has been playing for BCC for four years.

“I started lessons when I was six and played my first golf tournament when I was 10,” said Ryan.
This amateur golfer is very pleased with how far he has come and what he has achieved.

To name a few:
• Obtained junior national colours in January
• Winning the Big Easy Services (Pretoria) tournament
• Winning the IGT Waterkloof (Pretoria) tournament
• Winning the Bushveld (Ebotse), unbeaten in u-19 IPT tournament.
“I won 12/12 games, therefore I was awarded the most valuable player,” he explained.
Ryan won all these tournaments within two weeks and although he remains humble, is proud of his achievements.

“I play open amateur golf and I am ranked in the top 10 in South Africa.
“To win on the Big Easy Tour was huge, because the guys chasing me were making loads of birdies and eagles. I really had to concentrate on playing my own game and shut out what was happening around me.”
Some of his idols include Rory Milroy and Tiger Woods.

His support system are his mother and father (also coach), older brother Josh van Velzen, twin sister Sarah van Velzen and his girlfriend Derryn Andrews.
“I love golf. I have so many good memories but if I had to choose one it would be shooting my lowest round at Pinehurst in North Carolina, USA. I shot 68,” he said.
“I would like to thank SA Srixon (my equipment sponsor), BCC for their support and use of their facilities and my coach/mentor, my father.”
