Free self-defence class for women

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is known as a very male-dominated sport

Since reopening under lockdown, the East Rand Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy (East Rand BJJ), Alphen Park, has introduced a self-defence class exclusively for women.

“This might not sound like news, but trust me it is!” said Anine Lombard of the gym.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu is known as a very male-dominated sport, she explained.

“To put it into perspective, when I started about three years ago I was one of only three women in my gym and the only one to compete regularly,” said Lombard.

“Jiu-jitsu is an amazing tool for self-defence and we teach women there is power in being female.

“We train in self-defence techniques, ranging from learning how to choke someone twice your size to how to get an attacker off of your back.

“With gender-based violence on the rise, self-defence is very much needed in South Africa and this class will show you how practical and life-saving these techniques can be.

“East Rand BJJ has always believed in providing women with a safe and female-friendly environment in which to train.
