No injuries following a fire at polymers factory on Golden Drive

The cause of the fire is unknown, investigations are ongoing.

A fire broke out at a polymers recycling company on October 18 in Golden Drive, Morehill, around 4pm.

DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi said the firefighters were battling the blaze, preventing it from spreading to a densely populated industrial site.

“The well-alight factory fire call was reported and received via the emergency call centre at 4pm,” said Ntladi.

“The Benoni Central Fire Station promptly responded to the scene, backed up by firefighters from Nigel, Brakpan, Etwatwa, Boksburg, Kwa-Thema and Duduza fire stations.”

Ntladi said a fleet of 12 fire engines manned by 45 seasoned fighters were fully engaged in the suppression of the blaze.

“About 200 tons of grease stored inside the 210-litre drums capacity caught alight, emitting dense carbon smoke.

“Adding more risk is the Zama Zama informal settlement nearby.”
