Three men linked to taxi violence and murder arrested in CBD

The trio was arrested after police received information that the alleged suspects might be in Benoni; they kept a close observation.

Three men, aged 22, 29 and 35, were arrested after being linked to several cases of taxi violence and murder on September 18 in the Benoni CBD around 11.30am.

The trio was arrested after police received information that the alleged suspects might be in Benoni; they kept a close observation.

Gauteng police spokesperson Capt Mavela Masondo said the three men were spotted driving in a silver-grey Nissan Qhashqai and were intercepted.

“They were taken to their flat in Benoni. When police searched it, two rifles, seven magazines and a large quantity of ammunition of different high-calibre firearms were found,” said Masondo.

“The main suspect led police to Windmill Park in Vosloorus where an AK47 rifle, loaded with ammunition, was also recovered.”

Masondo added the three men are linked to several cases, including a case where a taxi owner and his brother were shot and killed in Protea Glen in Soweto in July 2019 and a case in Cleveland where a taxi owner and his driver were shot dead in Kensington in March 2019.

“The confiscated firearms will be taken for ballistic tests to determine if they have been used in the commission of crime,” he said.

A case of being in possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition was opened at the Benoni SAPS.
