Benoni police issue warning over bank followers

The spokesperson said criminals stop at banks and ascertain who is withdrawing large amounts of money and target them for robberies.

The Benoni police are urging people to refrain from withdrawing large sums of money as we are getting closer to the festive season and criminals are using every opportunity they get to rob others.

This comes after a man was robbed of an undisclosed amount of money on September 8 at Dusseldorf Street, Apex around 12.15pm.

Spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the man was from a local bank and driving to work, when he arrived he parked his vehicle at the company’s parking lot and went to the security guard at the gate to be screened for Covid-19.

“As he was at the gate, a silver Polo VW stopped next to them, four male occupants came out of the vehicle, two of them were armed with firearms,” said Sekele.

“Two of the men searched him, while the other two went to the vehicle he was driving, took the money and left.”

Sekele said it is believed that the man was followed from the bank after he withdrew the money. The man and the security guard were not injured.

A case of robbery with a firearm was opened at the Benoni Police Station.

The spokesperson said criminals stop at banks and ascertain who is withdrawing large amounts of money and target them for robberies.

She shared tips on how to avoid being a target:
• Always be on the lookout for suspicious people or vehicles, if you believe you are being followed, alert the security guards or deposit the money into your bank account.

• Look out for suspicious people at the entrance of the bank.

• Never go to the bank alone, always have someone accompany you. If you are being followed drive to the nearest police station.

• Do not make unnecessary stops after you have withdrawn a large amount of money and don’t travel the same routes.

• Make use of technology and transfer large amounts via internet banking.
