Flying Squad officers come under fire in Daveyton

Investigations continue into tracing of the suspects that fled from the scene, the remaining suspects and the ownership of the firearm

Two suspects are at large after officers of the Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) attempted to recover a vehicle in Daveyton, which led to some suspects fleeing and another fatally wounded.

They also recovered a firearm and four motor vehicles.

“On Saturday (August 15), officers received a lookout of a silver Mercedes-Benz E200 that had been stolen during a house robbery in Etwatwa,” said BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.

“Information led them to Yende Street, Daveyton, where they saw the same vehicle with three occupants inside. The officers immediately came under gunfire from the suspects and they retaliated accordingly. A chase ensued, leading to the suspects losing control of the vehicle and crashing into concrete palisade fencing.”

Giblin said two suspects managed to escape from the vehicle.

“An unidentified suspect was found fatally wounded in the vehicle. One Norinco pistol was recovered on scene, with seven live rounds of ammunition.”

In further policing, three motor vehicles were recovered abandoned:

  • White Hino Super-F at Exel and Hammer Streets, Clayville, reported hijacked on an Erasmere case.
  • White Nissan NP200 at Clayville Extension 45 reported stolen on a Norkem Park case.
  • White Volkswagen Polo in Bunyan Street and Bedford Avenue, wanted on an enquiry for a Pretoria West case.
