Another successful ecological burn at Korsman

Korsman Conservancy held its annual Controlled Ecological Burn on August 4 and as always, the burn was a success.

“We had a record number of volunteers and the burn was safely and successfully completed,” said chairperson of the Conservancy, Jane Trembath.

“Burning is an essential part of grassland management and the grassland is a biome which is adapted to fire, so if one does not burn it the grass becomes moribund – choked by dead growth and indigenous wild flowers do not have exposure to germinate.

“We burn sections of the sanctuary in a three-year rotation and since we started the burning regime, we have had a steady increase in wild flowers. It has also ensured a steady supply of fresh nutritious grazing for water fowl and grass seeds for the weavers and bishops.”
