#Lockdown: Gyms want ‘weight’ to be over

A local gym joined a nationwide protest on August 5 to highlight their plight in lockdown and urge government to reopen their businesses

On August 5, gyms all around South Africa held a silent protest for two hours in solidarity of their plight since lockdown was institutedin March.

Staff and management from Trinergy, in Northmead Mall, protested at noon for two hours.

“Obesity was always a problem in South Africa, but since lockdown it has become even worse,” explained Ryan Manthe, owner of Trinergy. “But this isn’t the only reason we want to re-open. Its not even a matter or wanting to re-open, we have too! We are responsible for feeding 50 people as we have employees who have to be paid. They have their own bills and rent to pay.

“We can’t stay closed, it’s time to let the gyms re-open. We comply with all Covid-19 regulations as temperatures will be taken at the door, sanitising protocols before and after attending the gym will be adhered to,” explained Manthe.

The gym saw members, employees and community members stationed outside the premises for two hours, showing their support for gyms reopening.

“We have over 3 000 members and they all want to get back to their fitness schedules,” concluded Manthe.
