Brazen robber stabs CIT driver in Daveyton then hijacks taxi

Despite being wounded, the suspect hijacked a fully loaded taxi by threatening the driver, who he forced to take him to Etwatwa

A 57-year-old suspect, who was arrested following a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery at a Daveyton petrol station on August 3, will appear in the Daveyton Magistrate’s Court today (August 5).

The man, who was arrested on the same day of the incident, will face charges of armed robbery, attempted murder and hijacking.

Daveyton SAPS spokesperson Sgt Constance Moalusi said a CIT van arrived at the petrol station to collect cash that day. The driver remained in the armoured vehicle and was approached by the suspect.

“The driver suspected something was wrong and warned the man not to approach,” said Moalusi. “Without any warning, the suspect then stabbed the driver in his back and took off with three cash boxes. The other security guard was alerted by cashiers inside the garage to the fact that someone attacked the driver and he pursued and shot and wounded the suspect.”

Moalusi said despite being wounded, the suspect hijacked a fully loaded taxi by threatening the driver, who he forced to take him to Etwatwa.

“The taxi driver stopped on the corner of Turton and Mocke streets, jumped out and ran away while alerting other motorists that he had a hijacker inside his taxi. The suspect took the cash boxes and tried to flee on foot but was arrested with the help of the community,” he said.

The injured driver of the cash van was taken to hospital for medical attention and the suspect was also taken to hospital under police guard.

The cash boxes and the knife used to stab the driver were recovered.
