Quick response by Benoni Flying Squad sees robbery and hijacking suspects behind bars

A thorough search led to the further recovery of numerous cellphones, cash and a laptop taken from the complainants

Thursday (July 30) was an action-packed day for Benoni Flying Squad (BFS) officers when two incidents led to the arrest of five suspects and the recovery of two unlicenced firearms and 23 live rounds of ammunition.

“The first incident occurred at around 11am when WO Riaan Nel and Sgt Nick Muller, posted on the R21 highway, monitored the radio and heard of an armed business robbery had occurred in Brakpan,” said BFS spokesperson WO Grant Giblin.

“Information was received that the suspects were travelling at a high speed on the R21 and that a white Mercedes Benz was used as the getaway vehicle. The officers teamed up with WO Jan Roos, from Brakpan SAPS, and his members from the Anti Hijack Unit.

“Roos was in direct contact with the informer and with the back-up of BFS they proceeded to the R562. The information led them to Tswelopele Section, Tembisa, where they tracked down the white Mercedes. The officers pulled the vehicle over and safely apprehended all the suspects. A 9mm Taurus pistol with the serial number filed off and 15 live rounds of ammunition were found in the suspect’s possession,” Giblin explained.

“A thorough search led to the further recovery of numerous cellphones, cash and a laptop taken from the complainants. The vehicle was impounded.”

The second incident occurred at around 4pm when Const Thabiso Mabaso responded to a complaint of a hijacking in Birch Acres, Kempton Park.

“He received a lookout that a gold Mercedes Benz was the getaway vehicle,” Giblin said.

“An alert Mabaso picked up the suspect vehicle with one occupant in Isimuku Street, Birch Acres. A chase ensued around the area with the suspect refusing to pull over until he lost control and collided with another vehicle in Sim Street. The suspect was swiftly arrested and a 9mm CZ pistol with eight live rounds of ammunition recovered.

“The serial number was tested and came out to be positively stolen on a Kempton Park case from June 2018. The vehicle was also impounded.”
