Struggling mom’s plea to City Times answered

The young mom had wanted to even give her children up to child welfare at one point as she felt she was failing them

After two years of misery, Vuyokazi Vabaza (28) was blessed with food and baby clothes after the Civilian Crime Intelligence Network intervened on July 3.

The story unfolded after Vabaza sent a Facebook message to the City Times asking for help.

We then contacted Mix & Stitch co-founder Mary Goby who passed the plea onto PR councillor Jordan Lotriet.

Lotriet explained that their work is to take donations from the Benoni community group and distribute these to individuals in need.

The food parcel which was donated to Vabaza contained various items including bread, milk, tinned food, maize and tea.

Life has not been kind to Vabaza since her grandmother died in 2018.

She and her siblings lived with the grandmother, but after her death her children decided to sell the house and the siblings and their children had to make their own way in the world.

This is when reality set in, she said.

“I had to start to be independent for the sake of my children, but life showed no mercy,” said Vabaza.

She is a mother of two children, aged 12 and six.

The Daveyton resident is currently renting in Chris Hani Extension One, living with her boyfriend and her 12-year-old son.

She is not receiving a social grant as her son was registered under her grandmothers name and the problem has not yet been fixed because of lockdown.

“I remember there was a time when I even wanted to take my children to child welfare because I felt I was failing them as a mother,” said Vabaza.

After all that has happened, she is grateful to have a supportive partner who has been her pillar of strength and who never got tired of helping her out.

The young mom was very grateful for the donations.

Anyone who could assist the family further can contact the City Times.
