Three injured following cash-in-transit heist on Putfontein Road

Police have launched a manhunt for the armed cash-in-transit (CIT) criminals who robbed a money van on Putfontein Road this morning (June 26) around 10.15 am.

Crystal Park SAPS spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli said the alleged suspects, who were travelling in more than one vehicle, managed to flee with an undisclosed amount of money.

“It is alleged the CIT van was driving on Putfontein Road, with the driver in front and two security guards in the back,” said Mopeli.

“Suddenly, the driver saw a Mercedes-Benz driving fast towards the van; the vehicle then crashed into the van and it flipped on its side.”

Mopeli said an unknown number of men pointed a firearm at the driver and ordered him to open the van.

“The robbers then removed the two guards from the van and ordered them to lie on the ground.

“They then took an undisclosed amount of money and firearms and fled the scene,” she said.

According to ER24 spokesperson Russel Meiring, the three guards sustained minor injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital for further care.

It is unclear how many robbers were involved in the crime.

Police are investigating a CIT heist case.
