Improved waste removal services at taxi ranks

The relaxation of lockdown restrictions has resulted in more commuters returning to public transport spaces such as taxi ranks, and with that the amount of waste generated has also increased.

One of the key Covid-19 regulations is the upkeep of hygiene levels where there is increased human interaction.

The Ekurhuleni spokesperson, Themba Gadebe, said the metro takes keeping taxi ranks free of litter seriously and now services them bi-weekly.

“Due to the increase in commuter traffic, the waste removal services will be moving into taxi ranks twice a week to carry out services such as litter picking, bin clearing and skip bins removals.”

Mandisa Phosa, the divisional head for Waste Management Services in the metro, said taxi ranks tend to host many people, from commuters to vendors and taxi operators.

“It is for this reason we pledged to intensify our assistance in keeping these facilities clean and well maintained for the covid-19 period and beyond.”

Furthermore, efforts to maintain cleanliness across the metro have been intensified through the introduction of the Keep Ekurhuleni Clean Project, which began in March this year.

Keep Ekurhuleni clean project sweeps streets clean

The Keep Ekurhuleni Clean Project, launched by the metro in March, has brought smiles to over 1 000 residents through the creation of temporal job opportunities.

Every day, the ‘Keep Ekurhuleni Clean Brigades’ as the workers in the project are known as, embark on cleaning of scattered litter, servicing of street litter bins, timeous removal of all filled bags and eliminating minor dumping hot spot areas around the metro.

Nomusa Chibuku (38) stays in Germiston and is employed as one of the brigades.

She says her normal day of keeping the metro clean starts at 7am until 5pm.

“We are tasked to keep the city clean especially now during the coronavirus period where hygiene levels must be maintained.

“I am glad that even though we work in conditions that can easily expose us to the Covid-19 virus, our employer makes sure that we have all the necessary protective equipment we need to keep safe,” said Chibuku.

The litter picking services have greatly improved the cleanliness of the environment across the metro.
