Doing good a mix of this and a stitch of that

The initiative will continue in its quest to help those in need and is accepting contributions from other organisations

Mix & Stitch, a local NPO, recently donated food, blankets and clothing to the community of Benoni to help them cope during the pandemic and to fight the cold of winter.

Co-founders Mary Goby and Sharon Kruger, who specialise in knitting, crocheting and sewing, have been doing charity work since lockdown started in order to help residents in need.

“We got very involved at the beginning of lockdown when a group called In it Together was formed. We broke away from that team a few weeks ago to concentrate more on our passion for knitting, sewing, crocheting, food parcels and other things,” Mary said.

“At the moment we hand out 50 food parcels a week, at least 150 hot meals with the help of organisations, babies have received clothing, nappies, camping cots, and households have received beds, linen, furniture and other items they need. We also have a blanket drive going at the moment,” she added.

Mix & Stitch has received help from other organisations, as well as sponsors, Mary added.

“The Benoni Ladies Forum has donated food parcels and are filling up Jars of Hope for us to distribute. We have been very lucky that local retailers, Pick n Pay Sheridan, Pick n Pay Oakfields, Pick n Pay Northmead and Superspar Rynfield, have assisted where they can.

“The Vegetarium and some of its customers also started a kitty so we can get some fresh vegetables once a week.
“We also have an organisation called CCIN where we all assist each other in any way we can.

“There are other businesses that have also assisted us, for which we are truly grateful,” said Mary.

To apply for food parcels from Mix & Stitch (only non-Sassa applicants), Whatsapp your name, cell number, address and ID number to 082 948 8026.
