On June 14, the day in which the Comrades was supposed to take place, Benoni Northerns Athletics Club (BNAC) has decided to hold its own Comrades Marathon.
“The route will go out through Bedfordview and back through Boksburg, and then through Benoni and surrounding areas,” explained John Ansell.

This is being done to raise funds for their development initiative which assists runners in the club with financial difficulties, with the core focus of getting about 16 people down to Durban for Comrades every year; but with this year’s Comrades being cancelled, BNAC took things into their own hands.

“This is going to be a very difficult run to do, 90km without the thousands of supporters coming out like they do for Comrades will make this quite challenging,” said Ansell.

The runners taking part in the BNAC Comrades are Marc Daniel, Mark Dingle, Perry Todd, Will Heystek, Matt Willis and Ross McMurdo, starting and finishing from the Benoni Northerns Sport grounds, with their goal of trying to raise R50 000 for their development programme.
“So far, the support has been overwhelming. We will publish the route once it’s finalised with expected times that the guys are expected at key points and they’d really appreciate any support they can get along the way,” said Ansell.

For club members who are not keen on doing 90kms in one day, they are doing a virtual Comrades over four days:
• June 11 – 25km
• June 12 – 20km
• June 13 – 24km
• June 14 – 21km
“All finishers will be getting a BNAC virtual-Comrades medal. While this is only open to club members, there is no cost, and we are encouraging those who take part to donate to the fund-raising initiative in lieu of an entry fee,” explained Ansell.”The Comrades Marathon Association is also doing a virtual race on June 14, so we can expect there to be a lot of runners on the roads all over the country. We would like to appeal to motorists to exercise patience and caution especially, next week Sunday,” concluded Ansell.
