Benoni SAPS takes a stand against illegal mining

All those arrested will appear at the Benoni Magistrate's Court soon.

Twenty-nine alleged illegal miners, aged between 18 and 48, were arrested during an illegal mining operation on June 3 in the Benoni area.

The operation was conducted by the Ekurhuleni Central District Operational Team from 8am until late.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the operation was to curb the ongoing illegal mining in the Benoni area.

During the operation, illegal mining equipment and bags containing refined sand were confiscated.

Benoni SAPS station commander Brig Ntakuseni Lukhwareni commended the members and assured that more operations of this type will continue to fight illegal mining in the area.

All those arrested will appear at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.
