Police urge commuters to be always alert when boarding a taxi, always check to the registration number or any identification in the taxi such as stickers or anything.

The Crystal Park police are again warning taxi commuters to be vigilant following a robbery, which has been reported recently.

Spokesperson Sgt Lerato Mopeli said on June 1 around 9.50 am a female who boarded a white Quantum at the corner of Totius and Concorde streets in Crystal Park was robbed inside the taxi.

“When the woman got inside the taxi, there were five men and a woman, she then sat next to the woman,” said Mopeli.

“Suddenly, while the taxi was on Concorde Street, one of the men grabbed her from behind and forced her to lie down.”

Mopeli said the robbers took her bank card, cellphone, and money, and then they demanded her pin number for her bank card.

She was dropped off on Trumpet Street in Rynfield.

“The victim said there was no registration number on the Quantum,” said Mopeli.

In June 2019, the Benoni SAPS reported to the City Times that it has come to the police’s attention that there is a taxi operating in the late afternoons in the Benoni area.

The white Quantum has three or four occupants, including the driver, and people boarding the taxi are robbed while inside.

In 2018, the Crystal Park SAPS reported that there is a white Quantum taxi transporting commuters in Benoni Small Holdings and surrounding areas.

Mopeli said most of the time the taxi would pick up commuters along Birch Road in the afternoon.
