St Dunstan’s learners return to school

The school was supposed to reopen on June 1, but chose to reopen on June 3 following the speech by the Minister of Basic Education.

“I imagine we are one of many schools across the country disappointed that we did not return to campus-based learning on June 1,” said the headmaster of St Dunstan’s College, Michael McConnachie.

“We are aware that we were legally entitled to return, but we decided on a more prudent approach and had postponed our start to June 3.”

McConnachie said it has been frustrating by the lack of clarity and contradictory information, and so they decided to wait for the Minister of Basic Education to address the nation on June 1 in case the criteria to return were changed again.

“We are conscious that our learners have been anxious and enthusiastic, and we are conscious that our educators are keen to engage with our learners rather than contact via a screen.

“Although we are apprehensive, we are excited that we will have learners and staff members back on campus while still continuing teaching online with some of our learners who are not returning.”

According to the headmaster, the school has established Covid-19 teams and have liaised with a number of service providers to ensure they are compliant.

“We have sent out clear instructions to our Grade 12 learners and parents which details the measures in place and to establish confidence in a return to school.”

The protocol for learners will be as followed:

• Screened on arrival.

• Complete a questionnaire.

• Sanitise on arrival and on entry to each classroom.

The learners will be moving classes, as the senior learners have different subject options and thus cannot remain in one classroom for the duration of the day.

“We have also established a monitoring system to ensure social distancing throughout the day, particularly during breaks, and at a later stage when our other grades return there will be staggered arrival and departure times and different entry points so as to avoid congestion.”

McConnachie concluded: “It has been a tough but stimulating time away from school and we wish all those returning to school in the Benoni area the very best for a fulfilling year.”
