Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said one of the suspects requested an Uber from Kempton Park to Crystal Park.

“Along the way, the suspect asked the driver to pick another passenger up on the side of the road,” said Sekele.

“They proceeded to Crystal Park and ordered the driver to stop at a park in Waterkloof Road.”

Here, the second passenger drew a firearm and ordered the driver to get out of the vehicle and then both suspects forced the driver into the boot of his car.

“The vehicle was then driven to Wattville where a third man was picked up and the three then proceeded to an open veld next to a cemetery in Main Reef Road. The suspects tampered with the vehicle’s tracking system before taking the victim out of the boot and tying his hands and feet up,” she said.

“As the suspects drove away, leaving the driver in the veld, they were spotted and stopped by police who were patrolling the area.”

Two suspects jumped out of the vehicle and fled but police managed to corner the driver, who was arrested.

The victim was then rescued from where he had been left in the veld.
