From garage to gym

They are both fitness fanatics who regularly attend fitness training at CrossFit MHC, Farrarmere Gardens, Benoni, but the lockdown has thrown their schedules out of sorts.

Veronique Mew was born and bred in Benoni.

Having lived here all her life, she now resides in Rynfield with her husband, Brandon Mew.

This led Veronique and Brandon to the idea of turning their garage into their new gym.

“Our garage has always had some gym equipment in it, we had the basic essentials but nothing like what we had access to at Crossfit MHC,” said Veronique.

“When we heard about the lockdown, the owner of Crossfit MHC allocated some equipment to us so that we could maintain our training schedules while in isolation.

“Not everyone received the same equipment, but the coaches also designed what they call ‘lockdown programme’ in such a way that everyone can do similar movements and training.”

Health and fitness has always been such an important thing to the Mew family.

“We started at Crossfit about two and a half years ago and we absolutely love it.

“Not only has it made a huge impact on our health and fitness but we have also met so many amazing people in the Crossfit community.

“Our coaches at MHC Fitness Centre are so dynamic, and really push us to improve while always ensuring movement standards are correct,” said Veronique.

During this lockdown, must training feel a little different to how it used to be?

“We only train in the mornings now, which frees up the rest of the day, six days a week. We are trying to maintain this throughout lockdown.

“The only thing we miss now is the interaction with our awesome friends and coaches.

“But we know it’s only temporary and we will be back at the box in no time.

“Training keeps us grounded and sane, we wouldn’t have it any other way,” said Veronique.
