The Benoni Northerns Cricket Club ladies (BNCC) have had another successful season, defended their league title alongside coach Gift Xaka.

During the season, consistent individual performances with the bat and ball saw four half-centuries by four different players, two maiden centuries, four, three wicket hauls, seven, four wicket hauls and two, five wicket hauls. These achievements were all shared between five bowlers.

Stand out performances with the bat came from their youngest player, Madison Landsman (16), with a 107 run knock, and Michelle Homman with 122 runs not out.

On the bowling front, Calley Jansen and Simonè van Dalen stood out with their five wicket hauls. Alicia Smith-Harding, Sian Dippenaar and Madison Landsman, all contributed with a four wicket hauls each.

Captain Simonè van Dalen said: “I extremely proud of the team, and the character they have shown throughout the season.

“We never underestimated any of our opposition, and knew that any team could cause an upset.

“This was our approach this season, and it takes 11 committed players on the day to be competitive and successful.”

What stood out for everyone witnessing this team play throughout the season, was the true sportsmanship that was shown when they played against the development sides, by assisting them on and off the field of play to ensure they encourage young ladies to continue playing cricket.

BNCC Women’s vice chairman, Joline Smit said: “I am extremely proud of the effort all around.

“The support we receive from the BNCC and the Benoni Northerns main club gives us the opportunity to grow women’s cricket, which is our main goal.

“We need to see that more girls are introduced [to the game] at a junior level in order to feed into the senior level.

“We need to grow the awareness at a high school level to ensure that there is competitive women’s club cricket.”

Looking towards the new season, the team wants to play more competitive games against stronger opposition in other regions.

They are looking at going on tour to another province, but this is all dependent on sponsorship.
