Schaper is a name that is heard everywhere, this shining star has made his way to the big leagues and isn't stopping there.

Jayden Schaper, now professional golfer, is not a name that is unknown to Benonians.

Schaper was and still is coached by his dad, Ryan.

They have practised at the Benoni Country Club every weekend.

For the last four years, Schaper has been coached by Grant Veenstra, former Sunshine Tour player and founder of The Grant Veenstra Golf Academy, at Jayden’s home course, Ebotse Golf Estate.

Making Benoni proud

With his very busy schedule and preparing for a golfing trip to Kenya, we caught up with him to get some comment on how things are going for him this new and exciting year.

Does everybody have the ability to reach a + handicap if they put their mind and effort toward it?

“Yes, I’m pretty sure that if the effort and dedication are there then anyone can achieve their goals.”

Are there any physical characteristics of a golfer?

“Yes, like in any sport you would have to develop your technique as well as build the correct muscles. Just like in many sports, golf has evolved and with it the need to become a professional athlete.

“The amount of golf we play nowadays and the constant travelling takes a toll on your body; therefore, the stronger and fitter you are the better.”

What was your most memorable moment as an amateur?

“Its very close as I have enjoyed many memorable moments through my junior and amateur career. But if I had to choose, it is a toss up between the Freddy Tait and the Junior Players championships played at the famous TPC Sawgrass stadium course.

Have you met any of your role models? If yes, which ones and how was it?

“Yes, I have met many of my role models; some of these guys are Tiger woods, Ricky Fowler, Trevor Immelman, Louis Oosthuizen, Sergio Garcia, Gary player, Jack Nicklaus, and my list can go on.

“I have been very fortunate, but I think the one that sticks out the most is Ernie Els.

“I have met him on a few occasions and I appreciate that he always takes the time to chat and offer valuable advice to me.

How many times a week do you train now vs how many times a week your trained before becoming pro?

“Nothing has changed, I have always practised hard, as well as trained in the gym.

“I practise and gym a minimum of five days a week, and go for biokinetics times a week as well.

How have you done so far?

“Its still early days, so I feel I have had a decent start and I am excited for the challenges ahead.

What are you most looking forward to in this year?

“The experience, travelling the world, playing the greatest game.

“My goal is to learn as much as possible while climbing the world professional golf rankings.

What made you start playing golf? How did you get here? And are you happy?

“As soon as I could walk my dad put a club in my hand, so as far back as I can remember its all I’ve ever wanted to do.

“I got here by living a life dedicated to golf and achieving my goals. It takes years of hard work, dedication and discipline.

“Over the years, we have built a great team around me.

“My team consists of my family, coach Grant Veenstra, my bio Ananda Hattingh, my equipment TaylorMade, Adidas, Oakley as well as my management team, Modest Golf.

“It’s because of all this support that I get to do what I love.

“I am truly blessed to play this wonderful game called golf as my chosen profession.”

Benoni wishes Jayden Schaper the best of luck in chasing his professional golfing dream.
