Gauteng aims to win all four divisions at the National Canoe Polo Championships

They are in the midst of their training for the National Canoe Polo Championships coming up on March 21 and 22.

East Rand Kayak Vikings (ERK) are hard at work with practice at Sail Benoni, Homestead Dam.

Last year, the event was held in KwaZulu-Natal (KZN) and this year it will take place in Gauteng, at Emmarentia Dam.

The Gauteng representatives are on a mission to not only win in all four categories but to also defeat their KZN rivals.

To recap the results from last year, KZN won the open and women’s categories, Eastern Cape won the u-21 men’s category and Gauteng won the u-16 category.

Canoeing represents a multitude of paddle sports, from beginners to Olympic athletes with a range of disciplines to suit all goals.

Canoe polo is played with a water-polo ball and involves teams of five players a side.

They play two ten-minute halves aiming to score goals suspended at either end of a cordoned-off dam.

“Our aim for the Gauteng team is to have a clean sweep of the event and win all divisions this year,” said Chris de Bree, national canoe polo chairperson and club coach.
