Local coach believes Futsal will better equip young football players

The course was a Futsal course that took place in England, in August and December.

Ryan Macfarlane, from the SuperSport United Soccer School at the Benoni Country Club, has officially completed his FA level two course.

Macfarlane has been going over to the UK for the past few years to do coaching courses and is now one of the only coaches in South Africa who has an FA level two in a coaching Futsal licence.

Futsal is known as ‘indoor football’ and is now played by most member associations of FIFA.

Macfarlane’s coaching levels all started with his FA level one in coaching Futsal.

This is a course that provides you with an opportunity to develop an awareness of both the practical and theoretical aspects of Futsal coaching.

Level two of the course is made up of 20 guided learning and face-to-face workshops covering a range of topics linked to the England DNA, which is the playing and coaching philosophy of England teams.

His next step to racking up achievements will be the UEFA B Futsal coaching course which is currently the highest qualification that you can get, concerning Futsal, in the world.

Since Macfarlane has completed his courses, he has chosen to impart the knowledge he has gained to the youth he encounters.

“SuperSport United Soccer Schools coach the children the same way that the youth are coached in Brazil, and focus on developing two footed players who are technically good on the ball,” he said.

“They learn to master the ball and play plenty Futsal to do this, which the SuperSport soccer schools play on a weekly basis.

“Futsal is an incredible tool to start developing with young football players.

“In Brazil, majority of kids play Futsal until the age of 12 before turning to grass football because statistically you touch the ball 600 per cent more often in a game of Futsal than you would in a 90-minute game of grass football.

“Players like Neymar, Christiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi grew up playing Futsal and they all say that it played a huge role in their development.”

The reason that Macfarlane decided to do his Futsal coaching courses is not only because he has always had an interest in Futsal as a sport, but also because he believes that Futsal is the best way to develop footballers.

“If youth players in South Africa are playing Futsal from a young age then who knows, the next Neymar, Ronaldo or Messi might come from this country!”
