More than 100 learners take advantage of free math lesson

Classes are from 9am to 10am in Afrikaans and 10am to 11am in English at the Dutch Reformed Church Benoni North, corner of Kerk Street and 11th Avenue.

Approximately 120 learners attended the first free mathematics lesson led by mathematician Pierre Jacobs on January 18.

The City Times published an article, Mathematician is offering free tutoring, on January 17 regarding the classes.

Since the publication, Jacobs has been inundated with calls from parents curious to find out more about the lessons. He has since been interviewed on 702 and received an invitation from Newzroom Afrika to talk about the free lessons.

Jacobs said since it was the first class he did not know what to expect. He was, in a sense, happy with the numbers because if more attended they would be pressed for space.

“We might have to have more classes if greater numbers attend,” he said.

He intends on continuing the classes for as long as he is healthy because he believes these lessons will help learners grasp concepts which they missed in school. He highlighted that attendance does not guarantee a pass mark, but it will broaden and strengthen the learner’s math base.

Learners who attend these lessons should bring their own stationery as he does not have the means to supply anything other than tuition to them.

“A kind donor has gifted us with a mobile whiteboard, which we greatly appreciate,” said Jacobs.

Jacobs is also appealing for donations for the Benoni Satellite House of Abraham Kriel. Reverend Strydom from the home said a few people have made donations on the day of the lessons, and others took the banking details and promised to make donations.

He said the funds raised will be used for the nine girls who currently stay at the home; their upkeep and school supplies.
