Farrarmere resident adamant on removal of vagrants and recyclers

Rutherford has previously raised her concerns with the City Times in recent years and despite making the matter known to the EMPD on several occasions, the issue persists.

Farrarmere resident Paula Rutherford is adamant on the removal of vagrants and recyclers from an open veld on the corner of Main Road and Windermere Drive, which is also next to the N12 highway.

“The first issue is the vagrants living next to the highway in the reeds,” explained Rutherford.

“Rats, filth and defecation are a common sight there yet there are people still living there.

“The second issue is that recyclers are using the area as a sorting place, creating a big mess in the process.

Rutherford said recyclers are using the area as a sorting place for recycling and what is not needed is discarded in the veld which is next to the N12.

“EMPD needs to be there to monitor the situation.

“Before we know it, the area will turn into a squatter camp.

“It is a huge area and one of the impacts of these ongoing issues is that residents will be unable to sell their properties due to devaluation of their properties which has become a reality for some other suburbs such as Dann Road in Kempton Park.

“Another massive consequence is the effect this is all having on the environment.”

During a visit to the site, the City Times found waste build-ups next to a stream of water as well as one of the vagrants asleep in the veld.

The EMPD has been contacted for comment.
