Police clamp down on illegal mining

The operation started at 9am and ran until 4pm.

Combined police units swooped on the mining shafts along the N12 and surrounding areas on January 15 as part of a clampdown on illegal mining.

Officers from the Benoni SAPS were joined by District Commissioner of Ekurhuleni Maj Gen Vincent Leshabane, EMPD officers, the National Intervention Unit and patrollers.

The operation started at 9am and ran until 4pm.

The police seized a variety of illegal mining equipment, including nine phendukas, seven metal pots, 50 iron balls and two iron stands. Eight people were arrested.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the aim of the operation was to put a stop to illegal mining in the area following the recent killings of suspected illegal miners.
