Hard work pays off for Unity Secondary School matriculant

The youngster, who is thrilled with these results, said: “It shows that hard work does pay off and my family is very proud of me.”

Coming from a disadvantaged background encouraged Clement Moukangwe to work hard to change his family’s situation through education.

The 18-year-old moved from Mpumalanga to Daveyton in 2016 to stay with his grandparents, Olidah and Samson Ntobeng, as they believed he would get a better education in Gauteng.

The Unity Secondary School matriculant obtained six distinctions in his final exams. He received distinctions for mathematics, life orientation, geography, life sciences, physical sciences, and religion studies.

The youngster, who is thrilled with these results, said: “It shows that hard work does pay off and my family is very proud of me.”

He said he managed to achieve these results as he used to attend the Targeting Talent Programme during school holidays since Grade 10 and on Saturdays he would attend the Star Schools Incubator Programme, in Springs, which helped with mathematics, physical science and English.

“On Tuesday afternoons I attended life skills classes with the Go for Gold Programme,” he added.

Clement said the support he received from his family, friends, and teachers was amazing.

“Without my grandparents’ support towards my dreams and their love I wouldn’t have achieved these great results,” he said.

“I would also like to thank my chemistry teacher Motlatsi Monareng for the support he gave me throughout my matric year.

“I want to tell him that may he continue to groom other learners to unleash their potential also.”

Clement plans to study chemical engineering at the University of the Witwatersrand.

“I’ve always wanted to study chemical engineering as I enjoy mathematics and science, especially chemistry.”

He added that his message to the 2020 matriculants is that hard work never killed anyone, but it brings smiles to many.

“Grade 12 is like any other grade. The only difference is the workload, so adapt as early as possible and don’t let your Grade 11 results discourage you.

“Manage your time efficiently because there is no time to waste in matric and if I did it, you can do it too.”
