Matric results for Benoni learners

The matric class of 2019 received their final results today (January 8).

In Benoni, the overall mood was jubilant as matriculants celebrated their achievements as well as their rite of passage into the world of work, study, entrepreneurship and other opportunities.

St Francis College

Pass rate 2018: 98.2%

Pass rate 2019: 98.7%

Number of learners: 77

Number of distinctions: 27

Principal Gary Elliott said: “We are proud of our learners’ performance and would like to congratulate them on putting a tremendous amount of effort to produce pleasing results.

“We wish them every success as a new chapter of their lives begins.”

Tshepang Nyalunga (17) from St Francis College thinks he could have done better but he is planning to study BCom accounting at the University of Johannesburg.

Willowmoore High School

Pass rate 2018: 96.3%

Pass rate 2019: 94.7%

Number of learners: 187

Number of distinctions: 87

Principal Lorna Sanders said: “We are pleased with the results and proud of the staff who got the learners to this point.”

Petit High School

2018 pass rate: 89%

2019 pass rate: 70%

Number of learners: 211

Number of distinctions: 37

Deputy principal Derick Mkhabela said they welcome and accept the results even though they are not happy with the 2019 pass rate.

“We will come up with strategies to improve our results for 2020,” he said.

“However, we thank our teachers, parents and the district office for the support they gave us.”

Unity Secondary School

2018 pass rate: 91%

2019 pass rate: 90.8%

Number of learners: 284

Number of distinctions: 127

Deputy principal Buyile Zondo said even though they had a challenge of overcrowding, they are proud of their results.

“We had high expectations, but we are happy that we didn’t drop that much. We commend our staff members for always going an extra mile.”

Noorderlig Gekombineerde Skool

2018 pass rate: 82.4%

2019 pass rate: 72.1%

Number of learners: 104

Number of distinctions: 7

Principal Frikkie Smith said they did their best in assisting the learners by having a winter school and an intervention programme for them, but their lack of interest was the main reason the results dropped.

“We had a lot of learners who lacked discipline and less interest from the parents also,” said Smith.

“We are hoping for the best this year, and we hope the parents will be more involved because you can lead a horse to the water, but you can’t make it drink.”

Benoni High School

Pass rate 2018: 98.1%

Pass rate 2019: 99.6%

Number of learners: 285

Number of distinctions: 152

Principal Eugene Rooyakkers said: “We are very happy with the results. I am grateful to the staff for committing to helping the learners and the learners for reciprocating. Everyone’s hard work is noted.”

St Dunstan’s College

Pass rate 2018: 100%

Pass rate 2019: 100%

Number of learners: 94

Number of distinctions: 88

Rector Michael McConnachie said: “There is always an element of apprehension and excitement when the results are released, but there is also the pressure which causes tension and stress.

“There is an ambient feeling about the final results and more emphasis needs to be placed on the learners’ school career as opposed to the final results.”

St Dunstan’s College learner, Andiswa Khumalo (holding report) was one of many happy IEB matriculants who received her results on Tuesday (January 7). The GDE results were released on January 8 and the top Benoni achievers results will be published in next week’s edition.

Hoërskool Brandwag

Pass rate 2018: 100%

Pass rate 2019: 99.31%

Number of learners: 146

Number of distinctions: 99

Principal of Hoërskool Brandwag said: “We always work towards a 100% pass rate and at the end of the day, we are very satisfied.

“We have also had excellent individual achievements and have an average of 75% for most some subjects and we are happy with that.”
