#GivingTuesdaySABenoni campaign receives generous donations

Around 400 beneficiaries are expected to benefit from the #GivingTuesdaySABenoni campaign.

Benoni’s The Almond Tree, Kids Haven, Home Start SA and Life Choices called on residents to support their #GivingTuesdaySABenoni fund-raising initiative on December 3, where generous contributions were received.

Various ways of donating to the cause on the day included donating online via a Backabuddy fund that was set up or by visiting participating restaurants or retailers.

Participating restaurants included:

• Del Forno at Farrarmere Shopping Centre

• Dingo’s Pub and Restaurant at Lakedene Centre, Lakefield

• Mugg & Bean at The Square at Farrarmere

• The Social House Café, Rynfield.

Trolleys were also set up at retailers where community members were able to purchase groceries and drop them off in the trolleys for the organisations.

Benoni High School learner Madison Landsman (15) and her parents Pam and Glen were happy to donate to the charities on the day at Mugg & Bean The Square @Farrarmere. Manager Busani Moyo said the restaurant’s participation was straight from the heart and thanked customers for their support.

Participating retailers included:

• Benoni SUPERSPAR, corner of Tom Jones Street and Ampthill Avenue

• Kit Kat Cash and Carry, Oos Street and Princes Avenue

• The Falls SUPERSPAR, Webb Street, corner of Great North Road.

At the time of publication, the following contributions were tallied:

• R8 697 was received from online contributions.
• R4 000 was received in groceries, with Kit Kat Cash and Carry donating a R2 000 voucher to the cause.
• R3 000 was collected from Del Forno Farrarmere.
• Mugg & Bean at The Square at Farrarmere will continue the campaign until Christmas.
• Dingo’s Pub contributed R360.

“#GivingTuesday encourages everyone to be generous and give donations, volunteer hours, donate food and clothing and perform acts of kindness for those in need,” said fund-raising coordinator of Kids Haven Susan Daly.

As reported previously by the City Times, The Almond Tree and Kids Haven wished to raise funds to provide a Christmas lunch for children who live in each home while Life Choices and Home Start SA wanted to raise funds to provide hampers to new moms, babies and young families for Christmas Day.

Wattville resident Frieda Mula (left) said her donation was for the children and that she hoped it would bring joy to them. She added that the organisations are doing good by taking care of children. She is seen with volunteer Sibongile Ngcobo outside Benoni SUPERSPAR.

“The groceries from all retail outlets were collected and shared as equally as possible,” said Kids Haven fund-raising assistant Lindiwe Dube.

“We are very grateful to all the participating retailers and restaurants.

“We also want to extend a special thank you to one of our volunteers, Marilyn Knell.”
