Bowlers raise awarness of sight disabilities

All participants had the opportunity to simulate a visually impaired bowler, using three types of simulator glasses.

The Atlas Bowling Club held a disability awareness day recently, attracting 32 entries, of which nine had never played bowls before.

They were proud to also host two prominent blind bowlers from Benoni, May Homer (Protea) and Beppie Summersgill (EKB District), as well as Cedric Summersgill, who directs Beppie.

All participants had the opportunity to simulate a visually impaired bowler, using three types of simulator glasses.

There were also players using a chair to bowl from as a substitute for a wheelchair, which physically disabled people have to normally bowl from.

“It was great fun,” said Summersgill.

“The players told us that they are now more aware of the challenges faced by visually impaired and disabled bowlers.”
