Laerskool Northmead learner Leané Wolmarans recently cut her hair in support of Cancer Association of South Africa, CANSA.

The Grade One learner, who has been described as a giver who would “not think twice to give the clothes of her back to someone in need”, donated her hair late in November owing to school and extra mural commitments.

Her contribution has been deemed a reflection of hope for the upcoming citizens in society.

The 2019 Global Hero of Hope CANSA representative, Sonia Pretorius, provided the following information regarding what is done with hair that is collected for the cause, and how members of the public can donate their hair.

Acrylic wigs

Acrylic wigs may be hired from your local CANSA Care Centre.

Human hair wigs

CANSA care cntres frequently have members of the public contacting them, wanting to donate human hair to make wigs for cancer patients experiencing hair loss.

“We do accept donations of human hair at our Shavathons, and throughout the year at our head office in Gauteng and via local CANSA care centres, countrywide,” said Pretorius.

“Hair donations received are then sent to a wig manufacturer of human hair.

“These wigs are given to cancer survivors or patients free of charge, the only exception being the CANSA Durban Care Centre where a contribution is required, as these hair donations are outsourced to an independent wigmaker.

“All donations are welcome.

“CANSA does not have a specific partnership with any hairdressing salons so a salon of your choice can be contacted when making a hair donation.”

Pretorius also explained the requirements for the CANSA Kindest Cut Campaign.

“CANSA wishes to receive ponytails in order to make sufficient wigs for cancer survivors requesting them.

“These wigs will be distributed, as requested, to CANSA care centres all over the country, and given to cancer survivors who need it most.

“Your donation can help make someone feel beautiful again.

Requirements – Human Hair Donations:

• Ponytail donation that is 25cm or longer.

• Hair should be clean and dry.

• All hair whether dyed or treated is acceptable. We are not able to use dreadlocks.

• When cutting the hair, please bind both ends with an elastic band and place in a zip-lock bag. This preserves it in the best condition while being transported to the wig manufacturer.

• Send your hair donation in a plastic bag with your name and contact details on it.

“Postage of human hair donations can also be made to CANSA with the following information:

For attention: Lucinda Carter

CANSA head office

P.O. Box 2121, Bedfordview 2008.

“Drop offs can also be made at your local CANSA care centre.

“To locate your nearest care centre visit www.cansa.org.za, or phone the care centre for address details.

“Any queries regarding wigs or the donation of human hair can be directed to your local CANSA care centre, alternately email: lcarter@cansa.org.za
