Toy Run a resounding success yet again

A live band, beer tent, food stalls and children's play area made up some of the main attractions of the day.

A total of just over 18 000 toys were collected from the 37th Gauteng Motorcycle Toy Run, which saw bikers from all across the province descend on Benoni Northerns on November 24.

With thousands of visitors on site, Benoni has been a popular end-destination for the run for the last six years, this according to chairperson and event convener Pete Beart.

“It’s a fun family event and all for a good cause,” Beart said.

“The main aim of the event is to collect toys for the less fortunate children and to promote the image of bikers.”

Beart said the contributions from bikers and residents as well as the excellent facilities at Northerns were factors that led to Benoni being the end-destination for so many years.

“This is an awesome sight and it is very likely that the next Toy Run will be hosted in Benoni again, but that decision will only be taken in the new year.

“We also want to apologise for any inconvenience caused to motorists who were affected by the road closures,” he added.

Eleven-year-old Alberton resident Zanelle Huyzers, who started her own charity called Archangel Raphael’s Helder, brought in around 1 100 toys on the day.

“I encourage other children to also do these charity drives and donate to the less fortunate,” she said.

“Donating makes you feel good on the inside.”

The Grade Five learner has donated twice to the Toy Run and said it took a total of about four months to collect the toys.
