Pub murder case continues

The trial of the three suspects in the Daniël Botha (26) murder case will resume in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on November 13. Botha died from injuries he sustained after a fight broke out at a Lakefield pub on July 26, last year. The accused pled not guilty on April 9 and the case was postponed for further investigation. Further trial dates are January 27 to 29, 2020, February 18, 20, 25 and 27, 2020.

Hit and run accused sentenced

Christo Nieman pleaded guilty to culpable homicide on September 29 and was sentenced to 36 months correctional supervision by magistrate by Mitzi Schutte. Nieman was wanted in connection with a fatal road accident which occurred on the corner of Evans and Benoni roads, Benoni Agricultural Holdings, in 2010.

Sibusiso Moses Shabangu (26), Khayalethi Magnificent Linda (28) and Boyboy James Phiri (39) were each sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by magistrate Mitzi Schutte after they were found guilty on charges of tampering with/damage/destroying essential infrastructure (transformer cables valued at about R150 000). The trio were sentenced on October 29.
