Teach your children how to handle potentially dangerous situations

• Never just park your vehicle and leave. Look around the vehicle to see if there are suspicious-looking individuals.

• Ensure your doors are locked and windows closed.

• When parking in a parking area try to engage with the car guard; get his/her name.

• When visiting someone, try never to park in the street or on the pavement. Rather ask to park in the yard.

• Never leave valuables inside the vehicle or in full view of others. Rather put your valuables in a secure place. When putting your valuables into the vehicle be aware of who is around you.

• When shopping, try to park in the more dense areas where there are more feet and eyes.

• Find the cameras in the parking area and park in full view of the camera.

• Try to have a device installed in your vehicle which will restrict thieves to go further than two kilometres if the vehicle is stolen.

• Practice being vigilant and aware of your surroundings. This does not come naturally to everyone at all times. You can even make it a game with family and friends and quiz each other on what you see.

• Emergency apps such as IER are available and can be downloaded from the Google play store. It is still free of charge and has resources to assist.

• Always call 10111 to report criminal activity and in order for SAPS to do a lookout.
