The installation of the traffic signals at the R23 High Road/Vryburg Street intersection will be done during the 2020/21 financial year (provided the budget is passed), according to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

Brentwood Park water issue addressed

The bulk water supply for the Brentwood Park area is from the Rand Water Northmead Reservoir and K/H pump station in Northmead, which pumps water to Farrar tower. The water is supplied to the Brentwood Park area through the bulk water pipeline, which delivers water directly to the distribution and reticulation network. Construction of the new Northmead tower has been initiated to stabilise or eliminate the low water pressure to no water problems in the area. The construction of the tower is currently in progress. The area mentioned experiences water shortage, mainly when the K/H pump station in Northmead fails, resulting in the Farrar tower being empty. The metro will monitor the pump station and ensure fewer interruptions.

High Road/Vryburg traffic signals to be erected

The installation of the traffic signals at the R23 High Road/Vryburg Street intersection will be done during the 2020/21 financial year (provided the budget is passed), according to Ekurhuleni metro spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

Ward 23 Clr André du Plessis said that the traffic light saga has been ongoing for the past few years and together with numerous other parents from Laerskool Brentwood Park, they managed to get over 1 000 signatures on a petition in this regard, which they forwarded to the Gauteng Provincial Legislature Petitions Committee.

He said, “The issue was addressed and the approval for traffic lights to be installed at this intersection was confirmed. Ekurhuleni was allegedly instructed to proceed with the installation of these traffic lights. There seems to be a hold-up for some or other reason, which is unknown to me.”

Concerned parent Anmari Strydom added that her son is in Laerskool Brentwood Park and every morning and afternoon when she drops him off or picks him up, it is a nightmare to get back into Brentwood Park Road (High Road).

“The mornings, especially, are very bad as the cars coming from the Agricultural Holdings side seem to be very late and tend to speed down Brentwood Park Road (High Road) towards Atlasville.”

Gadebe said, “The metro had the required study done and it is confirmed that traffic signals are warranted at R23 High Road/Vryburg Street intersection. The metro is currently in the process of finalising the traffic signal designs.

“Once the designs (the construction detail and the traffic signal timing plans) are done, they need to be submitted to Gautrans (the Provincial Authority that has jurisdiction on the R23) for approval.”

He concluded that the Gautrans process takes between three to six months, depending on its workload and capacity to get the designs and subsequent wayleave, which is a permission to work on the R23 road reserve, approved.
