Women empowered during career guidance workshop

The theme of the workshop was inspired by the 1956 women who stood together to fight the women injustices that affected the country then.

HR Company Solutions held a Women Impact the Outcome workshop at Grapes Restaurant on August 9 where 36 unemployed and job searching women from Ekurhuleni and surrounds were invited to participate in a career guidance workshop.

In South Africa today, the women face all host of injustices. The workshop focused on on a large number of unemployed women compared to men.

The women who were invited are part of the stats of the unemployed women in South Africa. They attended the workshop to be empowered on how to position themselves in the gender-based-unemployment space.

Madelein Smit, founder and MD at HR Company Solutions and the host, opened the event.

Smit set the tone and broke down issues around job-searching.

She talked about recruitment agencies when job-searching, and provided information on various online job-portals and much more.

To help equip women on their legal rights, Aphelele Tapile, a local labour expert, covered the following topics:

•Fairness of job interviews.

•How to differentiate between a fair job interview and nepotism.

•Legalities behind job interview processes.

•The South African Labour Relations Act protects and advances women of South Africa, promotes fair, equal opportunities and does not reprieve any discrimination made by an organisation that refuses to comply.

She said women also need to be held accountable in ensuring that they do the right things in their workspaces when looking for a job – accurate disclosure is important even if they have a criminal record.

In today’s world of digital and social media, the 36 beneficiaries benefited from understanding how to use their social media and digital platforms to be found by recruiters. The beneficiaries also received goodie bags with gifts from some of the exhibitors, including Keegor Group. They were given take-home job interview clothes to wear when they go for their their next job interview.

Realeboga Morubane, a beneficiary at the event, said: “I have been struggling to get a job, going to interview after interview but nothing was ever fruitful.

“I now understand that I need to change my approach and try again.”
