Court news in brief

The following cases were recently tried in the Benoni Regional Court:

Rape

May Tshili (38) was sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment for rape on July 25.

He raped a 30-year-old woman on July 2, 2016, in Etwatwa.

Tshili pleaded guilty to the charges on July 25.

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Ian Cox.

Attempted murder

Melissa Kloppers was found guilty of attempted murder on July 25.

The 28-year-old was sentenced for three years’ imprisonment, which will be suspended for three years on condition she doesn’t commit the same offence.

On November 28, 2018, following an argument at a pub in Northmead, Kloppers drove over a man deliberately after she was chased away.

Magistrate Mitzi Schutte handed down the sentence.

Illegal immigrant

Phosipho Moyo (34) was given two years’ imprisonment for being in the county illegally on July 25.

He was arrested on June 28 in Benoni.

Moyo will be deported after serving his sentence.

The sentence was handed down by Magistrate Mitzi Schutte.

Shoplifting

Musa Maneno, a Tanzanian national, was found guilty of theft on June 10.

The 41-year-old was sentenced to four months’ imprisonment, which will be suspended for three years on condition he doesn’t commit the same offence.

He pleaded guilty on June 10.

Magistrate Smita Naidoo handed down the sentence.

Dealing in drugs

Thabo Mthombeni (32) was found guilty of being in possession of drugs on June 12.

Mthombeni was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, which will be suspended for three years on condition that he doesn’t commit the same offence.

He was found in possession of drugs on April 9 in Chief Albert Luthuli.

Magistrate Smita Naidoo handed down the sentence.
