Benoni police warn of various crimes

Keep your things away and out of sight, so a snooping stranger can’t see valuables lying around the yard and use it to gain entry into your house.

The Benoni police have warned residents to avoid being victims of various crimes.

This comes after a number of house robberies reported in Brentwood Park and burglaries in Benoni Agricultural Holdings (AH).

Benoni SAPS acting Vispol commander Lt Col Nhlanhla Shibambu said most burglaries occur during the day when people are at work, school or running errands.

“It is important to take precautions during the day, at night and any time when you leave the house to ensure your home stays secure,” said Shibambu.

“Residents must keep their yard free of tools and ladders. A ladder or toolbox left outside can give an opportunist criminal help in gaining access to your house.”

Shibambu said homeowners should also walk around their house and scout out its weaknesses.

“The best way to protect your home from the outside is to survey it with the eyes of a burglar. If you can easily tell that a window could be open, a criminal will be able to come to the same conclusion,” she said.

Shibambu also encouraged residents to avoid walking alone as there are robbers targeting pedestrians, especially in Northmead.

The station shared steps on how to report complaints:

• Call 10111, give precise details, name, location and crime in progress and get a reference number.

• Contact sector vehicles:

Sector One: 071 675 6715

• Contact the relief commander on 082 332 4875.

• Call the station’s duty officer on 071 602 3090.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said general inquiries regarding sector policing, general concerns or complaints can be communicated to the relevant sector commander during office hours.

“Contact the , detective commander and station commander only after the above procedures were done and absolutely no assistance was rendered,” said Sekele.

Residents should take note that there is a suggestion box placed at Benoni SAPS Client Service Centre for any complaints or compliments related to the service.
