Wyman shines behind the wheel

The accolades are continuing to pile up for the Benoni youngster. He is the current Zwartkops Club champion, Gauteng regional champion and also a major contender for SA National Championship honours later this year.

Benoni Small Farms resident Wayland Wyman has managed to win back-to-back Senior African Open karting titles.

The 17-year-old Grade 11 Pinnacle College learner reclaimed the title he won in 2018, seeing off four reigning provincial champions, UAE champion Liam Crystal and 2017 world champion Jaden Els in some tense racing at the Vereeniging Kart Circuit.

His overall victory over three races landed him a ticket to represent South Africa at the Rotax World Finals later this year at the Sarno Circuit in Napoli, Italy.

Not even a first heat setback could stop the determined driver after the seat broke clean off his Tony Kart chassis rail due to excessive G-forces at high-speed corners, leaving him positioned near the back of the grid (12th) in heat two.

Wyman cut through the field, fighting his way to the front on the second-last lap of race 2 and followed that up with victory in the final race from seventh on the starting grid.

The gritty driver had another close call on lap five of the 18 when he came together with Crystal in a tussle for first place, but seized the lead and took the chequered flag by a massive nine second margin.
