Get a council wheelie bin by July 31

The deadline was initially July 1.

Ekurhuleni residents now have until July 31 to get a metro wheelie bin before council stops, on August 1, collecting waste put out in non-council containers.

The 240L wheelie bins have been distributed to residents and remain available at all the metro’s waste management depots and selected Customer Care Centres from Monday to Friday between 8am and 3.30pm.

Important things to note about the wheelie bins:

• When collecting a bin bring a copy of your ID and your municipal account.

• The bins are issued free but refuse collection is charged at R174.41 per month for each bin.

• Residents who are in need of more than one bin can apply for extra bins at an additional monthly charge.

• Bins must be put outside by 7am on the relevant suburb day, as per the metro’s collection calendar, and taken back inside as soon as possible after collection.

• Residents who lose their wheelie bin need to report this and get a case number from the SAPS before presenting the case number, a copy of their municipal account and a copy of their ID at the nearest waste depot when applying for a new bin.

Advantages of using the 240L wheelie bin:

• Provides more storage capacity than the refuse bin used previously.

• Are compatible with the truck’s lifting mechanism and workers do not therefore have to carry bins.

• Have a longer lifespan than a bag (about eight years).

• Minimises tearing of bags by rodents and stray dogs and curbs rodent infestations.

• Are durable and easy to clean.

• Are easy to handle with low risk of being exposed to sharp objects.

• Do not generate water vapour and are made of pest repellent material.

• Are cost-effective as the use of plastic refuse bags is less.

• Promotes uniform service standards and cleanliness in the metro.
