Successful promotional debut for power couple – Muller makes a winning comeback

The bill was headlined by the comeback of 30-fight veteran Johnny Muller at heavyweight following a two-year layoff to focus on business commitments.

Punch Club Promotions look set to become an integral part of the local boxing promotional landscape after successfully staging their maiden tournament at the John Barrable Hall in Benoni last weekend.

The East Rand husband and wife promotional team of Cameron and Chyrise Moore put together an impressive nine-fight card which drew a sizeable crowd and featured some of the sport’s newest recruits to the professional ranks.

The bill was headlined by the comeback of 30-fight veteran Johnny Muller at heavyweight following a two-year layoff to focus on business commitments.

With a touch of ring rust clearly evident, Muller encountered a tough customer in Kizito Ruhamnye of the DRC, but gradually found his rhythm and range in a fight of contrasting styles to gain a unanimous eight-round points decision.

Trainer Harold Volbrecht conceded that his charge wasn’t at optimum fitness and has a warm-up fight followed by another assignment in Russia penciled in for Muller in October.

As for 28-year-old Muller, he was just excited to be back in the ring and also conceded that he still had a lot of hard work to do in the gym as his comeback intensifies.

In the main supporting bout, John Bopape upset the unbeaten Ricky Tshabalala via a second-round technical knockout (TKO). Bopape dropped his opponent with a pin-point right in the second round for an eight count before referee David van Nieuwenhuizen called a halt to the bout shortly thereafter.

Young junior featherweight Cayden Truter, a multiple South African amateur champion, is a man going places and attracted a good deal of attention with a first round TKO victory over Thabang Ditshego, while Benoni light heavyweight debutant Keagan Mills suffered a four-round shutout by Mduduzi Moyo.
