Miss Benoni to lend helping hand to Northmead Street Store

All and any donations are welcomed

The Northmead Square’s The Street Store will be open to those in need on July 18, in 14th Avenue, and you can get involved with this Mandela Day initiative along with Miss Benoni, Caitlyn Wright, by either donating to the cause or becoming a volunteer.

Northmead Square marketing manager Sharné Bodenstein said the pop up store idea, which started in Cape Town, is a great way to bring a dignified shopping experience to the homeless and needy in the community.

“The homeless are given the chance to shop through the items and decide what they may need most,” said Sharné.

“They do not pay for the goods they pick out on the day.

“All and any donations are welcomed.

“There is a need for more male clothing in smaller sizes as well as shoes but every donation is appreciated.

“We will also have care packs available on the day which will include toiletries, as well as food items.”

Caitlyn said she is all hands on deck for the initiative as she would also be collecting clothes and other items for the shop.

“I want to create awareness around the event and I hope others will get involved,” she explained.

“I’ll be donating to the cause and I encourage members of the public to do the same.”

The Street Store will be open from 10am until 2pm on the day.

Sharné confirmed they would be expecting around 500 shoppers on the day and said volunteers were needed to help sort through the clothes prior to the event.

“We need volunteers to help sort through the donations every Thursday until the day of the event.

“We will be meeting from 4pm until about 7pm this Thursday and the next.

“All donations that remain after the Street Store will be donated to the Manger Care Centre.”
