Putfontein SAPS crime update

Women should avoid walking alone at night. Rather arrange transport when you are out with friends and also remember to alert someone about your whereabouts at all times

The Putfontein SAPS is urging women to be more careful following the number of rape cases reported recently.

Putfontein SAPS spokesperson Const Raider Ubisi said the rape incidents occur in an open veld with unoccupied toilets in Mayfield along Gumbi Street.

“The incidents occur during the night until around 2am when most people are returning from shebeens,” said Ubisi.

“On May 26 around 2am, a 21-year-old woman was raped repeatedly by three men after they dragged her to one of the toilets.”

Ubisi added that the woman was walking from a tavern with her two sisters, who managed to escape.

“Social crime prevention, together with the Victim Empowerment Centre (VEC), has been handing out pamphlets in the area to educate residents about the importance of reporting any crime, especially domestic violence,” he said.

Ubisi said common robberies are also problematic, especially in Extension One and 11.

“The alleged robbers are targeting people who are using open velds as shortcuts to rob them off their valuables,” he said.

“Residents must avoid walking alone, or rather walk in the main road instead of using shortcuts, especially now that it is winter and it gets dark early.”

Ubisi said, however, on a positive note, the high police visibility and arresting of drunk drivers have managed to minimise the fatalities along Du Randt Road.

“With the continuous roadblocks, we have also limited the movement of stolen goods and vehicles.”

The spokesperson is also appealing to parents to always know where their children are as there are people who are recruiting young boys to initiation schools.

“If you have information about such people, report this to the police.

“Parents should come to the police station to open a missing person’s case and police will investigate,” he said.

Ubisi thanked the Putfontein CPF for their continuous support in helping police curb crime in the area.
